HuaYi TCM 2.0

Chapter 11 - Mobile SMS

11.1 About Mobile SMS in HuaYi TCM

1 How it works

HuaYi TCM 2.0 integrates the SMS functionality. The SMS can be easily sent to the patients from the computer manually or automatically.

The SMS is sent or received from a GSM modem connected to the computer. The GSM modem exists in a mobile phone, various kinds of GSM modem device. In some scenarios, HuaYi TCM 2.0 can send SMS by connecting your mobile phone to the computer.

2 The Functionality

3 What is a GSM modem, GPRS Modem, 3G Modem, 3.5G Modem, 4G Modem?

A GSM modem is a specific type of modem which accepts a SIM card, and operates over a subscription to a mobile operator, just like a mobile phone. When a GSM modem is connected to a computer, this allows the computer to use the GSM modem to communicate over the mobile network. While these GSM modems are most frequently used to provide mobile internet connectivity (for instance, connect a GSM modem to a latop for internet access on travel), many of them can also be used for sending and receiving SMS messages.

A GSM modem can be a dedicated modem device with a serial, USB or Bluetooth connection, or it can be a mobile phone that provides GSM modem capabilities.

A GSM modem exposes an interface that allows HuaYi TCM 2.0 to send and receive messages. The mobile operator charges for this message sending and receiving as if it was performed directly on a mobile phone. To perform these tasks, a GSM modem must support an “extended AT command set” for sending/receiving SMS messages, as defined in the ETSI GSM 07.05 and and 3GPP TS 27.005 specifications.

A GSM modem can be a dedicated modem device with a serial, USB or Bluetooth connection. For instance, insert a GSM SIM card into the modem and connect it to an available USB port on your computer.

A GSM modem could also be a standard GSM mobile phone with the appropriate cable and software driver to connect to a serial port or USB port on your computer. The phone supporting the “extended AT command set” for sending/receiving SMS messages, as defined in ETSI GSM 07.05 and/or 3GPP TS 27.005, can be used for SMS in HuaYi TCM 2.0. However, not all mobile phones support this modem interface. For instance, IPhone, the new Nokia model do not expose their GSM modem interface.

It is recommended to use a specific GSM modem instead of a mobile phone. Some mobile phones support sending SMS from a computer, but do not support transferring SMS received to a computer. The manufactures of the specific GSM modem include Huawei, ZTE, Wavecom, Falcom , Multitech and iTegno, etc.

When buying a GSM modem, make sure it supports SMS functionality, i.e., it supports an “extended AT command set” for sending/receiving SMS messages, as defined in the ETSI GSM 07.05 and and 3GPP TS 27.005 specifications.
